Replatforming from Magento 1 to Adobe Commerce

BuitenHof Tuinmeubelen

Starting with just one shop in the Brabant region, BuitenHof Tuinmeubelen has grown over the years into a chain with 25 garden furniture shops, spread across the Netherlands and Belgium. At this family business, you can rely on high-quality garden furniture designed and produced by BuitenHof itself. Buitenhof's collection can be endlessly combined, allowing customers to design their own garden or balcony.

From Magento 1 to Adobe Commerce

At the time BuitenHof came into contact with XSARUS, they were using the Magento 1 platform. Because this platform is no longer supported and the successor to Magento 1 has more and better functionalities, BuitenHof decided to replatform the webshop to Adobe Commerce (formerly Magento Commerce). The requirements expressed were:

  • Integration with the SAP ERP solution used by BuitenHof
  • Integration with the inriver PIM system also implemented by XSARUS
  • Seamless alignment of the online style with the offline style
  • Meeting the conventions of a contemporary webshop

Development of Adobe Commerce platform

XSARUS developed an Adobe Commerce platform for BuitenHof. With this platform, BuitenHof makes a significant leap in user-friendliness and performance. By integrating with SAP and inriver, the product data, stock and price data are always up-to-date and thus also identical to the information in the physical stores. As a result, much less manual work is needed to maintain the webshop. In addition, BuitenHof can create content pages and schedule content changes itself. The latter, of course, in accordance with Buitenhof's house style, which is completely aligned online with BuitenHof's offline expressions. The user experience for the customer is improved, which will eventually result in conversion improvement. A few examples are:

  • Shop meets today's conventions
  • More online inspiration through the use of the page builder
  • Better product information and images thanks to the connection with inriver's PIM solution
  • XSARUS headless checkout best practices
  • Insight into current stock and delivery times
  • More cross- and upsell opportunities
  • More focus on shops and making appointments in-store

Mobile first

The traffic share on mobile is the largest for BuitenHof, which is why – as is almost standard nowadays – the new webshop was developed mobile first. The consumer is inspired by showing more and better images. Not only on content pages but also on the product overview and detail pages. Throughout the webshop, up- and cross-sell are used. This way, the consumer is better informed about the complete range of BuitenHof, which helps to increase the average order value.

By switching to the new Adobe Commerce environment with XSARUS's help, we are starting a new chapter in the area of online experience for our customers.

Complexity of articles

Selling garden furniture introduces additional complexity. Take, for example, a lounge set: on the webshop, this is a single article for consumers, but in reality, it consists of several dozen different products. This presents quite a challenge in determining the exact stock levels and delivery time of such a lounge set to provide the customer with a concrete delivery promise. In the development of the new platform and integrations with inriver and SAP, this was taken into account. The stock and delivery time of these complex products is always up-to-date to ensure customers are not disappointed.

Working together towards the deadline

For BuitenHof, the season begins in the spring, setting a strict delivery deadline for the new webshop. Through extensive Adobe Commerce training and intensive guidance during the implementation, BuitenHof was able to contribute to the new platform at an early stage. Thanks in part to the close collaboration and involvement, the deadline was met and the platform was delivered within budget.

Future vision

BuitenHof and XSARUS have established a clear roadmap. Together, we work daily on the platform to stay abreast of current trends in e-commerce and the garden furniture industry.

Where before the pandemic the focus was mainly on offline sales and the webshop focused on driving visits to the store, we now see a shift towards online sales. Together, we tackle the challenge of successfully offering and selling garden furniture in the mid to luxury segment online.
